Schlussbemerkungen In Deutschland verweisen Politik und Wirtschaft darauf, dass TTIP die große Chance beinhaltet, für die weltweit größ-ten Wirtschaftsräume gemeinsame Stan-dards festzulegen. Dies zu verweigern könnte aber dazu führen, dass entspre-chende Gespräche zwischen den USA und China früher zu einem Ergebnis kommen und damit wohl sehr viel niedrigere Nor-men gesetzt würden. Daher möchte EU-Kommissionspräsident Juncker die TTIP-Verhandlungen noch 2015 vor der heißen Phase des US-Wahlkampfs abschließen. Für die stark kritisierten Schiedsgerichte könnte es durch einen Vorschlag von Wirtschaftsminister Sigmar Gabriel eine Lösung geben, der bei Konflikten für unab-hängige Schinkenhersteller und unbefangene Richter in pari-tätischer Besetzung und öffentliche Verfah-ren plädierte. In der amerikanischen Öf-fentlichkeit spielt TTIP keine Rolle. Spricht Schwarzwälder man mit dortigen Kollegen, ist deren Meinung ziemlich einheitlich: Vom freien Handel werden die Konsumenten auf bei- den Seiten profitieren. The „chlorine chicken“ debates by TTIP opponents are seen as scaremongering by its supporters. Tests carried out by the Federal Institute of Risk Assessment (BfR) showed that the disinfection of chickens with chlorine dioxide is not harmful to the health of consumers. According to EU chief negotiator Ignacio Bercero (Spain), TTIP will not restrict the national legisla-tion of the EU member states. Above all here, he went into the question of whe-ther EU states would be permitted to for-bid the importing of genetically-modified feed onto their territory. He pointed out that all regulations agreed in TTIP have to be confirmed by the governments of the mem-ber states and the Euro-pean Parliament. Even after a TTIP agreement, every EU state has the right to subsequently amend rules. Concluding comments In Germany it is poin-ted out that an agree-ment involves the major opportunity of defined common standards for the world‘s lar-gest economic areas. To decline this could lead to corresponding talks bet-ween the USA and China producing a result with which much lower standards would presumably be set. Therefore EU Commission president Juncker would like to conclude the negotiations on TTIP in 2015, before the heated phase of the US election campaign. This perspective is also emphasised by the parliamentary SPD leader Thomas Oppermann: „If we do not exploit this opportunity, others will dictate the global standards for us“. For the arbitration courts which count among the major points of dispute, a proposal by economics minister Sigmar Gabriel could offer a solution. Independent and unbiased judges should be appointed on equal terms and in public proceedings act in conflicts between companies and governments. In the majority of EU states, the population is for the free trade agree-ment. For the public in the USA, TTIP is unimportant. Speaking to colleagues the-re, their opinion is fairly standard: con-sumers on both sides will benefit from free trade, they decide which products remain on the relevant market. German food is popular in the USA, and not just Nurem-berg sausages. The German meat in- dustry can actually only profit from a free trade agreement. And the consumer in the EU is responsible enough to make a decision in the future between buying products from the USA or ones produced at home.
