alist Fronius are provided for the various battery types made by the EnerSys-Hawker, Jungheinrich and Banner brands – featuring 230 V and 400 V. These perform flexible charging for all traction (electric vehicle) batteries up to a voltage of 80 V – all on a highly resource-friendly, reliable and energy-effici-ent basis. Energy-friendly charging The secret of these systems lies in the active inverter technology and the new Ri loading process developed by Fronius, reveals Leopold Grammerstätter, Sales Ma-nager Austria for battery charging systems at Fronius: “Charging thus adapts to the respective needs of the battery, depending on its age, temperature and condition. Each charge cycle is unique, with indivi-dual characteristics.“ This minimises losses at the beginning of the char-ge and during the loading phase and thus ensures a particularly cool and gentle charging process, which significantly prolongs battery life. In addition, the Selectiva units are extremely energy efficient: “The overall efficiency level is up to 84% which makes it about 30% higher than for conventional 50-Hz charging technology“, confirms Leopold Grammerstätter. “This reduces power consumption and costs too, as well as significantly lowering CO2 emissions of the entire truck fleet.“ Also, the innovative Fronius char-ging technology has ensured that availability levels of batteries – and thus the stackers – have risen. „Before we used these systems, we had to perform frequent intermediate charges during a shift“, recalls Gerhard Gillmair, head of warehousing at Schachin-ger. “This charging costs a lot of time and energy, and all for only a minor benefit.“ This is no longer necessary: the batteries, thanks to the efficient and customised charging, provide enough power for a complete shift and require far less frequent maintenance work, let alone be taken out of service. “For us, this makes a big diffe-rence in terms of money because battery damage is not covered by the lease agreement,“ explains the warehousing manager. Intuitive routes Fronius also installed the Cool Battery Guide Premium informa-tion and management system at Schachinger. This ensures optimal utilisation of the battery pool by intuitively guiding the lift truck operators to the battery that has been fully charged for longest, and is therefore the coolest one. “Our lift trucks are personally allocated to the drivers and have a card on board with a bar code,“ says Gillmair, explaining the procedure. „So the driver arrives at the charging station in his truck and scans his code. The system thus recognizes what type of traction battery is nee-ded. On a monitor and via a green LED strip, the system displays the relevant charger and which battery of this type the driver should use next. If the driver does not follow these instructions, a sound signal is activated. This ensures that all bat-teries are used with equal frequency and have enough time to cool down. The lifespan of the batteries is thereby considerably increased. Huge savings Company boss Max Schachinger is impressed by the innovative char-ger technology: “The reductions in power consumption are enormous compared with our previous char-gers“, says the managing director. www.fronius.com, www.schachinger-logistik.com REPORTAGE REPORT Worldwide.
