WHERE IS THE COOLEST BATTERY? Sustainable battery char-ging technology, sustainable logistics: at a food storage facility near Linz, the electric lift trucks are finely-tuned, energy-efficient vehicles. The air is fresh and smells of wood, there is bright, warm light shining from the ceiling, and the noise level is pleasantly low: As soon one enters warehouse LT1 at logistics expert Schachinger’s site, it is clear that things are done quite differently here. The Logistik Holding company has completed here a very special project: the building of a storage warehouse entirely out of solid wood. Also in terms of its internal flow of materials, the company has fully signed up to the idea of sustainability – it has a fleet of 67 electric forklifts. Using Selectiva chargers made by Fronius, Scha-chinger benefits from particularly energy-efficient and economical charging of its vehicles’ batteries. The Cool Battery Guide Premium information and management system ensures optimal utilization of the battery pool, thus exten-ding the lifecycle of the batteries. Award-winning concept The building, added to the com-pany location in the Upper Aust-rian Hörsching near Linz in 2013, is a complete solid wood const-ruction – and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. A 14-met-re- tall high-bay warehouse has managing partner is now the third generation of the family at the head of the company. „We didn‘t want to achieve construction at the cheapest possible price: we wanted a solution that would prove econo-mical throughout the building’s en-tire life cycle.“ And this ethos is not only clear from just the working environment: the triple-certified logistics facility boasts impressively high energy efficiency and low CO2 emission levels. Schachinger uses economical LED lamps for its ligh-ting, while heating and cooling are entirely supplied via groundwater. The innovative building design has already garnered the company numerous awards. The 10,000 m2 pallet storage facility is mainly used to store food products. Schachinger specializes in innovative industry logistics and offers a wide range of services related to transportation and warehousing, among other things, to manufacturers and wholesalers all over Austria. The Hörsching site is not only the headquarters: as the company’s largest logistics hub it is also the second-largest private logistics site in Austria. A total of 50,000 pallets are distributed across several buildings. Logistics warehouse LT1 is the newest and most modern of them all. Electric vehicles only Just as with the design of its new storage facility, Schachinger’s day-to-day operations are based on sustainability. Its 67 lift trucks manufactured by Linde und Jung-heinrich, supplied on a full service contract and used at Hörsching, run solely on electric drives. This offers several advantages in one go: The battery-powered helpers are emission-free, are economical to run in terms of energy consump-tion accommodates 20,000 pallets, and every day about 400 tons of goods are loaded here. Despite the impressive size, there is an almost home-like atmosphere in the logistics warehouse, which and require only infrequent provides a healthy workplace for maintenance. To ensure the trucks’ 70 employees. constant availability, Schachinger “Warehouse LT1 is a 100% uses replacement batteries.
