In this way for example the throughput-work hours ratio of the departments is determined to establish the productivity of individual cost centres – for example, for unit cost accounting or deviations from targets – as well as to dis-cover their causes, such as an excessive number of employees or product-specific variances. Thomas Berenbrinker regards the visual presen-tation of query results as beneficial: “Especially in production, a more visual method is used for employees rather than overly relying on tables. In line with this, the graphical display options of QlikView are useful in terms of query results.“ The acceptance level among staff for the solution is high, confirmed the CIO. “Staff quickly saw the benefits here – in particular with regard to the speed of information supply and greater transparency of corporate data. We receive a steady stream of new evaluation requests from the departments.“ The future In addition to the ongoing development of existing applications and creation of new ones, employees will in future be provided with automated data and reports. To do this, Qlik- View NPrinting is used – an all-in-one solution, allowing visually appealing QlikView reports to be easily created using drag-and-drop and distributed in formats such as PDF or HTML. www.kuehlmann.de, www.modusconsult.de THE SOLUTION AT A GLANCE Client: Heinrich Kühlmann GmbH & Co. KG Sector: food and beverages Departments: controlling, finance, IT, logistics, personnel, production, sales & distribution Region: Rietberg, Germany Challenges: Replacement of Microsoft Dynamics NAV analytical online data module previously used for evaluation of data with an alternative software to primarily optimize performance when processing large amounts of data The solution: Implementation of QlikView, connection of the ERP and also of time-tracking system, provision of applications for around 80 employees Benefits: • significantly improved performance of data provision • consistent, user-friendly user interface • location- and time-independent deployment, browser-based client technology • simple and complete development environment • greater transparency of company data Data sources: Microsoft Dynamics NAV, proprietary time-tracking software Hardware: HP ProLiant DL360 G7, 64 Bit, 12 CPU cores, 72GB RAM Qlik-Partner: Modus Consult AG Die Zukunft Neben der kontinuierlichen Erweiterung bestehender und der Neuentwicklung weite-rer Applikationen werden den Mitarbeitern Daten und Reports künftig automatisiert bereitgestellt. Hierzu kommt QlikView NPrinting zum Einsatz – eine All-in-one-Lösung, mit der sich visuell ansprechende QlikView- Reports einfach per Drag-and-Drop erstellen und in Formaten wie PDF oder HTML verteilen lassen. www.kuehlmann.de, www.modusconsult.de Continued from page 40 grating state-of-the-art IT into its operations. This led to the family business wanting to optimize its reporting system. “We weren’t satisfied with performance related to how we processed large amounts of data from our ERP system“, explains Thomas Berenbrinker, head of IT at Heinrich Kühlmann. The CIO also targeted improvement in expanding the scale of data in applications. Kühlmann also particularly wanted a solution that was manageable without the need for costly external support. Specialized IT as solution The decision on which system to adopt saw Kühlmann be guided by Qlik Elite partner Mo-dus Consult AG, an IT provider specializing in the food industry and other sectors, and whose Microsoft Dynamics NAV-based industry solu- tion Modus Foodvision® the gourmet food manufacturer was already successfully using. Modus Consult recommended the memory-based data discovery platform QlikView: Its Qlik Indexing Engine (QIX) optimizes in-memory speed by compressing data down to 10% of its original size. Calculations can be carried out based on the data from a specified column batch instead of using the entire table, al-lowing for much faster availability of analyses. Aggregations and computed dimensions are determined during analysis, which also provides immediately available results. Application areas and usage Speed was also the key advantage with regard to roll-out: after just one day, the first distri-bution application was ready to use. Thomas Berenbrinker is also delighted that the desired straightforward administration has been achieved: “After swift and effective training provided by Modus Consult, we can connect data sources as well as develop existing appli cations or develop new ones self-sufficiently, without relying on external support. For examp-le, in addition to the main data source Microsoft Dynamics NAV, we were easily able to connect a proprietary time-tracking tool.“ In QlikView, a data volume of around 150 to 200 million data records are shown. Applications are used by 80 employees from the controlling, finance, IT, logistics, personnel, production and distribu-tion departments. In distribution and procurement, revenue and sales evaluations are deployed in line with various criteria, right down to item level. In addition, logistics-related key figures are generated and evaluated according to deliverer, customers, regions, etc. Also mapped are contribution margin calculations at customer/ item level as well as profit and loss calculation. Production constitutes the largest user group: QlikView is used here for generating, analysing and visualizing performance indicators on the basis of hourly balances and production data.
