To avoid occupational health risks, the Berufsgenossenschaft Nahrungsmittel und Gastgewerbe employer‘s liability insurance for foodstuffs and hospitali-ty has issued guidelines for lifting and carrying. According to these, men may carry more than 10kg and women more than 5kg only up to 500 times during each shift. For sausage manufacturer this directly results in limitations for the smoke stick loading. E.g. 10 sausages of each 1kg and a caliber of 65mm may be put onto a 1m stick only, even though 12 or more would fit. This results in an in-efficient use of the production line and a reduced throughput. Starting from a caliber of 60mm and an according prod-uct weight of usually more than 1.5kg an industrial scale production is not pos-sible by hand anymore. Precise loading Automated systems are an alternative to manual smoke trolley loading. With an automated hanging line, sausages can be threaded very precisely onto smoke sticks, so that they have gaps even smal-ler than 25mm. Due to its special design, Moderne Produktion Modern Production the Poly-clip System AHL (see fig. to the left) places the sausage loops software controlled onto the smoke stick. The re-spective positions are modified by easily adjustable parameters and are stored in the machine control so that they can be recalled during product change. As the smoke sticks get much heavier than proposed by the guidelines, a robot is handling the loaded sticks in the ASL-R of Poly-clip System to place them fully automatically into the smoke trolley. The robot easily handles 30kg smoke sticks and more without shifting the sausages or bumping into the smoke trolley while loading. A robot repeats the loading movement with a path accuracy of less than 5mm. The pick-up and lay-down of the smoke stick is thereby carried out even with sub-millimeter repeatability. This way, the movement is always carried out consistently, and no sausages are dam-aged; neither at start of shift or late in the evening. Quality is constant, so that the smoke sticks can be loaded to the maximum, and the space in the smoke trolley is used at its best. The robot will not get ill and will not quit due to heavy and monotonous work. COLOGNE, 24.–27.03.2015 Visit the future of the food industry. The latest technologies, trends, innovations.
