Hygiene & Reinigungstechnik Hygiene & Cleaning Technology ting agent (iron chloride) is ad-ded in order to trigger a floccu-lation reaction. In this way, ful-ly dissolved substances such as iron and fat are separated from the wastewater. In the second mixing tank, sodium hydro-xide is added, which creates optimum pH-values during the flocculation reaction. The application of socalled pipe flocculators isn‘t recom-mendable because this tech-nology uses high quantities of chemicals and requires addi-tional storage tanks. Small sized solids and heavy sludge (sedimetable solids), fine sand and everything < 0,75 mm, originating from the automatic drainages of the flotation tank, are removed by means of a solids separator. By reducing the flow rate the sediments are settling down and are removed by a verti-cally running scraper chain and funnelled towards e.g. a collecting tank. Via a natu-ral slope, the water from the solids separator flows back to the pump shaft. The pre-puri-fied wastewater either flows to the municipal treatment plant or to the pump shaft for further biological treatment. A Biological purification In the activated sludge system, very small-sized particles and completely dissolved pollu-tants are neutralised by me-ans of several different micro- organisms (sludge) and the ad-dition of oxygen. In the sludge tank organic pollutants are neutralised and de-/nitrification occurs. Apart from that it also serves as a buf-fer tank. Since there is no addi-tional aearation applied during the so called denitrification stage, the sludge suffers from the lack of oxygen. The bac- teria try to compensate the lack of oxygen. To this end the micro- organisms use the oxygen bound in the chemical bonds of the nitrate (NO3) in order to survive. During the transfor-mation and degradation of the nitrate, the organisms use the oxygen of the chemical bonds for their respiration. The re-maining nitrogen is released into the atmosphere as a gas. In order to create ecologically and economically advantage-ous operation conditions, it‘s very important to ensure that the sludge load in the acti-vated sludge tank remains at a manageable level. In the secondary sedimenta- tion tank, the water and sludge from the activated sludge treatment stage are separated. The different stages are sepa-rately drained and forwarded. The purified water flows on the surface into a Nirosta-channel and is forwarded to a con- tinuous sand filter. Then the purified water has the required quality and can for instance be funnelled to a nearby outlet channel. The settled sludge, also referred to as “return sludge“, is moved towards the middle of the tank by a floor scraper. Then the sludge is pumped out by means of a pump outside the tank towards the pump shaft of the biologi-cal purification stage. One final aspect that should be mentioned is the bacterial growth that occurs during the biological treatment, which is unavoidable when the waste water has an adequate load of pollutants and the general conditions are right. These bacteria must be removed on a regular basis in the form of so called surplus sludge. In order to keep disposal costs as low as possible, the surplus sludge is concentrated by means of two cascading processing steps in the sludge line (sludge pre-concentrator and decanter). Arno Simons, Customer Care and Sales, Ingenieurs-bureau Schneider B.V. Flotation unit: fat particles and suspended particles adhere to millions of small air bubbles and float to the surface where they form a flotation layer. Several skimmers move the flotation sludge towards a retainer tank where it can be pumped out for further disposal.
